Guangzhou is the third biggest city in China and a striking mix of the old and new. Founded in 214 BC, the city is home to some of the oldest architecture in China, from the fully preserved colonial villas to the Liurong Temple, which dates back to the 6th century and is one of Guangzhou’s most popular attractions. The city is also home to a number of very futuristic structures, which dominate the skyline along the Pearl River. Guangzhou is a popular shopping area and has a large number of malls and street markets. Food is a focus in many of these areas, and Guangzhou boasts the most restaurants per capita than any other city in China. The city has a subtropical climate, with the hottest months being June - October, and warmth throughout the year.

Business Information

Thanks to its location on the mouth of the Pearl River, Guangzhou is a major sea port and one of the busiest trade centres in China. The city is informally known as China’s ‘factory floor’ and exports more goods around the world than any other Chinese province. Many of the ‘Made in China’ goods that are distributed around the world come from here, and the city makes an impressive revenue each year. Glass and steel skyscrapers make up the skyline throughout the city, with new 5-star restaurants and hotels being built every year. There are brand new subways and highways built through the city which makes travel between districts simple and convenient.

Entertainment And Dining Out

Guangzhou offers a great deal of entertainment options for both travellers and residents. Karaoke, tea rooms and performances make up a large part of the entertainment on offer, and there are many entertainment venues alongside the Pearl River. The Pearl River Night Cruise takes in some of these and is a fun evening activity in its own right. Guangzhou has three famous bar streets: Binjiang Lu, Huanshi Lu and Bai e Tan, and there are a great variety of restaurants as well - the largest number of restaurants per capita in China.

Transport Information

The Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport offers 123 scheduled flights throughout China and around the world. The airport is situated approximately 28km from the city centre and is easily reached thanks to the wide variety of airport shuttle buses and metro lines running from the airport to surrounding areas. The city has three train stations which offer easy access to the various districts, and there is a long distance bus service which travels through the city and to surrounding regions regularly.
