Forest Gate is an area of east London in the Borough of Newham that lies directly east of Stratford and the London Olympic Park. The area’s name is a reference to the purpose it served for centuries as the southern gate of Epping Forest, which once stretched continuously from Epping to what is now Romford Road. The main road route through Forest Gate is still Romford Road, which was first established by Romans as a major transport link between London and Colchester. Modern day Forest Gate is a busy and vibrant urban area renowned in part for its parks and particularly Wanstead Flats, which lie a little way north of Romford Road. The flats are home to several local grassroots football clubs, whose ranks have produced numerous England sporting heroes, including Sol Campbell, John Terry and Jermaine Defoe.

As well as being the place where hundreds of footballers honed their skills, Wanstead Flats is an expansive area of open space and bio-diversity that is a great place to visit and spend time. Other nearby attractions and sites of interest include Upton Park, home of West Ham Football Club and the areas around the River Lea, which runs into the Thames after passing through much of east London. Neighbouring Stratford now boasts a number of hugely impressive stadia thanks to the area’s hosting of the Olympic Games, which also encouraged the construction of Westfield Stratford City, one of the largest entertainment and retail complexes in London.
