Leyton is an area of east London that lies within the borough of Waltham Forest and around five miles north east of central London. The district takes its name from its position as a town or settlement close to the River Lea, which still marks it western boundary. Evidence of Roman development in Leyton has been found and since Anglo-Saxon times the town was considered part of the English county of Middlesex, until it officially became part of Greater London in the 1960s. Leyton incorporates part of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, which famously staged the Summer Olympic Games in 2012, and is home to the popular east London football club Leyton Orient FC. Leyton is distinct from Leytonstone, another district of east London that lies immediately north east of Leyton. Both areas lie close to Wanstead Flats, an expansive area of open space and parkland that is the southernmost reach of Epping Forest, an ancient woodland still managed by the City of London Corporation.

Both the London Underground and Overground rail services have stations in the district, with lines running directly to central and north London respectively.
