Wakefield is a city and major centre of economic activity in West Yorkshire in the north of England. The city lies along the River Calder and on the eastern edge of the Pennines, a range of mountains and hills referred to as the Backbone of England. Wakefield is a short distance south of Leeds, the largest city in Yorkshire and is equally close to Huddersfield, a major market town that lies to the west. The city was an important site in the Wars of the Roses, which raged between supporters of two competing local dynasties as they vied for the English throne during the 15th century. In later centuries, Wakefield grew in prominence as a centre for local commerce thanks mainly to the establishment of an inland port.
