The town of Hemel Hempstead is located in the borough of Dacorum, in the county of Hertfordshire. Even though settlements have existed in the area since as far back as the 8th century, the region was granted the status of a New Town only after the Second World War. Predominantly an agricultural market town during the 1800s, the area gained importance after the first railway was opened in the late 1800s. Development in the region began in the form of houses and villas for the residents who typically commuted to London for work. In time, various businesses chose Hemel Hempstead for their main offices, transforming the region from a dormitory town into a thriving urban locality. The Museum of Technology is one of the main attractions in the area, providing a look into the history surrounding the First and Second World Wars.
