Worcester is a historic city, located in the county of Worcestershire, in the West Midlands region of England. The city lies around 17 miles south-west of Birmingham, the largest city in the Midlands and one of the most important economic centres in the UK. Worcester is famous in part for its association with Worcestershire Sauce, which is still made in the city at the Lea & Perrins factory. The city is also well known to students of history as the site of the final battle in the English Civil War in 1651 when Oliver Cromwell’s forces defeated royalist supporters of King Charles II. Worcester developed along the banks of the River Severn, which still cuts right through the heart of the city today.
