Elephant and Castle is an area of south London known primarily as being the point at which a number of major roads convene having crossed the River Thames. The area has been known as Elephant and Castle since the late 1700s and its prominence as a key transport junction in south London grew along with the number of road bridges stretching across the Thames. Lying within the Borough of Southwark, Elephant and Castle is home to numerous pubs, nightclubs and cultural venues, as well as large parts of the London South Bank University. Elephant and Castle is a key part of the Borough Southwark, which also incorporates districts running right up to the River Thames, as well as Dulwich, Peckham and Bermondsey.
