Durham is a regional municipality in Southern Ontario, Canada. It is located east of Toronto and includes in its boundaries the towns of Ajax, Oshawa, Pickering, Clarington, as well as the townships of Brock, Scugog, and Uxbridge. The region is part of an economically well-developed area of Ontario, called the Golden Horseshoe. The region has access to the lakelands of Simcoe, Scugog, and the Kawarthas. Its southern boundaries are Lake Ontario, while the northern area includes small towns, farms, and hills.

Business Information

The region benefits from being part of the Golden Horseshoe. Durham is a centre of the automobile industry, accommodating the headquarters of companies such as General motors, Volkswagen, and BMW. Major employers include General Motors, Ontario Power Generation, Durham College, University of Ontario Institute of Technology, and other small transportation firms. Durham and the Golden Horseshoe provide many opportunities for serviced offices.

Entertainment And Dining Out

The region offers diverse entertainment opportunities. Fans of the performing arts can visit the Ajax Community Theatre, the Whitby Courthouse Theatre, or The Whole Damn Pyle Comedy Experience in Whitby. Dance performances are provided by the Swagga Right Dance in Ajax. Other attractions include the Whitby Public Library, the Salvation Army Oshawa Temple, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery and the family home of the founder of General motors in Oshawa. Characteristic with its rural areas, the region welcomes visitors with many roadside markets and local ‘Pick-your-own’ farms. Dinning attractions include: Archibald Orchards & Estate Winery – offering fruit wines, gift shop, and a nearby golf course. Tyrone Mills – one of the oldest water-powered mills in Ontario, offers visitors apple cider and doughnuts, Ocala Orchards Farm Winery – offers non-alcoholic sparkling juices.

Transport Information

There are a number of airport serving the Durham area. The nearest major airport is Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF/CYKF) and is 105 km (64 miles) from the centre of Durham. The Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ/CYYZ) and the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport (YHM/CYHM) also provide connections the area and are both within 100 km (160 miles) of Durham. Reaching the region by car is possible through several highways: 401, 407, 7, 7A, 12, 35, 48, 115, Durham Highway 2 and 47. The public transit in the region is serviced by Durham Region Transit bus routes and the GO Transit rail and bus network. The Lakeshore East and Stouffville GO Transit train lines serve Durham and directly link the region to Union Station in the centre of Toronto.
