Wollongong is a city in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is located in the Illawarra region, and is the third largest city in the state – following Sydney and Newcastle. It is situated on a coastal plain between a steep embankment and the Pacific Ocean. The name of the city is pronounced ‘Wool-on-gong’. This seaside city is 82 kilometres (51 miles) south of Sydney.

The largest economic factors in Wollongong are coal mining and steel production. Companies in the area include the BlueScope steel facility at Port Kembla, situated directly to the south of the city. Wollongong has 17 surf beaches to choose from, including North Beach. This is one of the most popular beaches in the greater Sydney area. City or South) Beach is situated right at the end of Crown St, by WIN Entertainment Centre. This is a great beach, with a very different view of steelworks and dunes, just minutes from the city centre. Typically the restaurants in Wollongong are situated on Keira St or Corrimal St. They include Coconut Thai – offering both meat and vegetarian dishes. Another option is Lagoon Seafood Restaurant which is said to be the best seafood restaurant in the area. The John Dory dish is a speciality and can be enjoyed with a breath-taking view of North beach.

Transport Information

Wollongong is primarily serviced by Sydney Airport with connecting links to Sydney provided by rail and road. It is typically an hour drive from the airport to the city. Wollongong is a part of the Sydney commuter belt. There are hourly train services between Sydney and Wollongong on the South Coast Cityrail line. Once you get to Wollongong it is easy to walk around the central business district. There is also a free city bus loop.
