Antwerp is a city and municipality in Belgium and is the capital of the Antwerp province of Flanders. The city has one of the largest seaports in Europe. Antwerp has a long and culturally rich history. It houses many interesting historical buildings from different periods. This dynamic city attracts a lot of Flemish and foreign artists, writers, intellectuals, and actors. This is reflected in the many trendy bars and shops that you will find throughout the city.

Business Information

Antwerp’s port is one of the 10 largest in the world, and the principal source of the city’s wealth. The accompanying docklands and five oil refineries are home to a massive concentration of petrochemical industries. The generation of electricity is an important industry in Antwerp, with four nuclear power plants at Doel, a conventional power station in Kallo, as well as several smaller combined cycle plants. Antwerp’s other financial mainstay is the diamond trade, which mainly takes place within the diamond district. Many buildings in Antwerp offer serviced offices. VLM Airlines is headquartered on the grounds of Antwerp International Airport in Deurne, Antwerp.

Entertainment And Dining Out

Antwerp is home to the second largest harbor in Europe and consequentially an array of 16th and 17th century architectural marvels stemming from a long maritime history. Walking tours abound, and are a great way to see the city. Be sure to head to ‘t Hofke, a restaurant situated in a wonderful ’secret’ alleyway. This romantic little Antwerp restaurant offers antiques, an arched cellar, a lovely summer garden and delicious French-Belgian bistro cuisine.

Transport Information

Airlines operating flights to Antwerp from the UK include Air France and no-frills airline City Jet (flying from London City and Manchester airports). The flight time from London to Antwerp is a little over one hour. The Antwerp Airport is 4.5 miles southeast of the city center, with transfers available on arrival. De Lijn is Antwerp’s transport company operating a regular and efficient bus and tram service in and around the city. A few tram lines run partly underground and this is referred to as the Metro system. Useful trams for visitors are the 2 and 15 which run between Groenplaats, at the heart of the old town, and the Centraal railway station. Most bus lines also begin outside Centraal station.
