Leuven is the capital of the province of Brabant, situated in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It is located about twelve miles east of Brussels. The township of Leuven is made up of the historical city, and the former municipalities of Heverlee, Kessel-Lo, Wilsele, Wijgmaal and part of Korbeek-Lo. This thriving, dynamic city is a true university town. This means that during the academic year, from September to June, the town has a youthful feel to it. The university brings in about 35,000 students every year. The historic center of Leuven is one of the most beautiful in Belgium. It offers a wide range of cafés, restaurants, cultural institutions, and shopping neighbourhoods.

Leuven is home to Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest brewer group and one of the top-five, largest consumer-goods companies in the world. It is also the headquarters of Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, the largest and oldest Catholic university still in existence. Katholieke Universiteit Leuven makes this area an important European institution for academic research and education. The area surrounding the university is a prime location for office space. A good portion of the economy is dependant on the university’s academic research. Several biotech and ICT companies sprang up due to this research, including Gasthuisberg, the academic hospital and research centre, and a large number of private service providers in the medical and legal fields. Because it is the capital of the region, many governmental institutions are located in Leuven. This is also the regional headquarters of transport corporations such as De Lijn.

Entertainment And Dining Out

Leuven offers a Friday market, there is also a flea market every Saturday offering great finds for the savvy shopper as well as the flower market in the pedestrian-only part of Brusselsestraat, which is a must see. Dining options are plentiful in Leuven. Along Muntstraat you will find a mix of styles, from classical French Belgian cuisine - to Mexican, Italian, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese.

Transport Information

To get to Leuven you can fly into Brussels Airport, which provides a connection to Europe, America, Africa, and Asia. There is a train and bus station at the airport with suburban trains to Leuven running every half hour on weekdays and every hour in the weekend, the journey takes no longer than 15 minutes. Taxis also wait at the arrivals area.
