£5million Office Space Plans for Network Rail Approved in Gateshead

A new maintenance centre for Network Rail has has been given the go-ahead in the Gateshead area of Tyne and Wear.

It is thought that this £5million centre will bring together Network Rail’s 300 staff and regional sub depots into one single space, allowing maintenance of particular railways in Northumberland, Durham, Tyneside, Wearside and Teesside.

Construction will begin toward the end of 2011, with plans to create a two storey business centre comprising of 2,010 square metres of office space. Developer, 3R Land & Property also plan to construct an on-site storage facility and car/bicycle parking lot in the hope to restore the currently derelict area.

Planning consent has also been permitted for the remainder of the site to include a hotel, restaurant and 10,000sqft of professional office space, and a further 150 car parking spaces.

Not only will this scheme benefit Network Rail and those who use the service, but as Paul Rutter, Maintenance Director of Network Rail also states, “This scheme will help regenerate a neglected area of Gateshead and create jobs for the local economy as well as delivering a fantastic new mixed-use development for the local area.”

This £5million regeneration will also help boost business in the area as a whole, meaning now could be a great time to relocate or rent serviced office space in Gateshead.
