Basel is located at the junction of the Swiss, French, and German borders. In fact the city spills over Switzerland’s borders with some suburbs actually located in the countries of France and Germany. This busy municipality is Switzerland’s third largest city in terms of population. Basel is both an industrial hub and a centre for international banking.

Business Information

Basel, located as it is on the Rhine River, has long been a major city for commerce and industry. Currently, the city serves as a hub for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry in Switzerland. Companies such as Novartis, Hoffman-La Roche, Ciba Specialty Chemicals, Clariant, Basilea Pharmaceutica, and Syngenta are able to make use of the Rhine for shipping and the Basel airport for airfreight. International banking is Basel’s second largest business with the Bank for International Settlements located within Basel, as well as the main offices of UBS AG. There are many executive suites in the area.

Entertainment And Dining Out

The famous Zoo Basel, which is reportedly the second most popular tourist site in Switzerland with more than 1.7 million visitors annually, is a big draw for Basel. The city is also home to museums such as the Kunstmuseum which contains artwork from medieval times and also has several works of art by Rodin and Picasso. If you are interested in archaeological ruins, the Augusta Raurica is a Roman ruin that was formerly the site of a Roman colony from the year 44 BC. The site also features an open air theatre and a museum. Whether you are interested in casual dining or want something really special, Basel has you covered. The Acqua Osteria is located in a converted waterworks building, this restaurant setting is a mixture of industrial and elegance and is known for serving excellent Tuscan dishes. For something more casual try Susu’s where you can stop by for a quick lunch of their famous corn soup in the downstairs restaurant or you can step upstairs for a more sophisticated meal that has touches of Asian and Italian influence but provides traditional Swiss desserts like chocolate mousse.

Transport Information

Basel is served by EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg which is owned and operated by both France and Switzerland. The airport is located in France, having both a French side and a Swiss side. Basel has three different railway stations, two of which are connected but are operated separately by German, French, and Swiss authorities. This unique situation has allowed Basel to call itself the home of the first international train station. Public transportation within Basel is extensive and includes a tram service.
