Berlin is the capital and chief urban centre of Germany. It is situated about 112 miles (180 km) south of the Baltic Sea, 118 miles (190 km) north of the Czech-German border, 110 miles (177 km) east of the former inner-German border, and 55 miles (89 km) west of Poland. Berlin lies in the wide glacial valley of the Spree River, which runs through the centre of the city. Berlin has an eclectic mixture of glamour and grit, offering top museums, galleries and the grand opera, while its guerrilla clubs, gourmet temples, and ethnic snack shacks highlight a very different side to the city. Whether your tastes run to posh or punk, you can find your style in Berlin.

Entertainment And Dining Out

The Floating Lounge in Berlin is a retro lounge, situated on the Eastern Comfort Hostelboat. The perfect time to go for a drink is at sunset when the sun paints the Oberbaumbrücke (bridge) a fiery red. This is a very romantic, very Berlin activity. There is a boat party on Wednesday nights, bringing together an international crowd. It’s a fun way to meet locals and visitors over a beer and bratwurst. For a quick cheese burger, try Burgermeister. This is a burger joint retrofitted into a century-old public toilet, situated on a traffic island below the elevated U-Bahn tracks. It offers big and delicious hamburgers. Schwarzwaldstuben is reminiscent of old-world Germany. The tongue-in-cheek decor provides plenty to peruse as you wait for your meal. The food is delicious, authentic southern German cuisine, while the portions are large at this cosy corner restaurant. Try the Geschmelzte Maultaschen (sautéed ravioli-like pasta) and a Rothaus Tannenzäpfle beer, straight from the Black Forest.
