Burgos is the capital city of the Burgos province, located 240 km (149 miles) north of Madrid. It was the historic capital of Castile. This city in northern Spain is situated at the meeting points for the Arlanzón river tributaries. Burgos has a Gothic Cathedral that was started in 1221. Much of the construction spanned the 13th through the 15th centuries. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cathedral features alabaster pilasters, panel-pictures, and an ornate façade.

The economy of Burgos is dependant on the cultivation of wheat. It is also a very industrial city. The city has a large industrial park in north Spain, called Villalonquéjar. The city is also home to the University of Burgos. This public university offers over 30 different undergraduate degrees, over 20 PhD Programmes, as well as several Official Masters and other graduate courses. There are many locations available for office space within the Burgos province.

Entertainment And Dining Out

A must see in Burgos, the Monasterio de las Huelgas Reales or Monastery of the Royal Retreats, was founded in 1180. This monastery offers architectural details in many styles, and the cloisters have amazing details and designs. The Museum of Human Evolution is the showcase for the findings taken from the archaeological site of Atapuerca, which is located 20 km (12 miles) east of Burgos. The Atapuerca site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The caves held fossils and stone tools used by the earliest Hominids in Western Europe. Some of these great things are displayed in the museum. Dining options in Burgos include, La Fabula – has a modern dining room that is alive with classical music and food choices that include crispy vegetable spring rolls and desserts such as chocolate soufflé with mango ice cream. Reservations are needed. Another option is La Comidilla de San Lorenzo offers innovative dishes with choices such as steak with raspberry sauce and tuna tacos with mashed potatoes and peppers. It also offers art exhibitions, and a young, vibrant feel.

Transport Information

Burgos-Villafria Airport is located 5 km (3.11 miles) from the city centre. It offers daily flights to Barcelona International Airport and during spring and summer months to Palma de Mallorca, and Paris Orly. Walking is the best option for seeing the main attractions of Burgos. You can also rent a bike, and take public transportation. There are a number of major roads that can be joined at the borders of the city including the A-1, AP-1, A-62, and A-23.
