Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands archipelago, and is situated in the centre between Tenerife and Fuerteventura. The island has often been said to be a ‘continent in miniature’ because of its varied terrain, with sun-baked beaches overlooked by snow-topped mountain ranges. There are also areas of deep forest across the island, meaning that the island can easily fit the tastes of any tourist or resident. Gran Canaria has warm weather all year round, with temperatures ranging from 18 degrees Celsius in winter to 25 in summer. The capital city, Las Palmas, dates back to the 15th century and offers visitors a great range of shops, restaurants and bars, as well as colonial architecture and an interesting history to learn about.

Business Information

Because of the year round spring-like conditions, and the various entertainment facilities and attractions offered by the island, Gran Canaria’s most important industry is tourism. Most of the revenue generated on the island comes from the tourist trade, and the most lucrative businesses include sales and PR companies, the service industry and tour operators. Summer is the busiest time for business in Gran Canaria, although tourism does turn a profit all year round.

Entertainment And Dining Out

There is so much to do for entertainment in Gran Canaria, and the island may well be considered a non-stop place of fun and relaxation. Beach breaks can be enjoyed by tourists whatever their interests, as there are high-energy coastal resorts such as Playa del Ingles as well as quiet towns such as Playa de Amadores. Nightlife is plentiful across the island, particularly in the south, where hundreds of bars and clubs stretch along the beachfront. Playa del Ingles is a top location for nightlife, and hosts the Kasbah centre which is a mass of clubs, pubs and karaoke bars. Restaurants tend to cater for British tastes, and offer food from around the world as well as full English breakfasts and Sunday roasts.

Transport Information

Gran Canaria is fairly compact as an island and thus does not require too much variation in the way of transportation. Gran Canaria Airport is just 19km south of the city centre, and 25km from the most popular tourist hotspots in the south. Buses are the most popular means of getting around - known as Guaguas, they are the main means of transport on the island and are provided by two operators, running regularly across the island.
