Lugano is a city in Switzerland, often called the Monte Carlo of Switzerland. This has become a Mecca for celebrities and the well-known as they come to enjoy the weather, and the views that include Lake Lugano and the Lugano Prealps Mountains. Lugano is located in the Italian speaking part of southern Switzerland, close to the Italian border. It is the ninth largest city by population in Switzerland.

Business Information

Besides being a tourist destination, Lugano is a banking centre, the third largest in Switzerland. The major Swiss banks all have offices here in addition to many of the private international banks. Tourism is the city’s main economic driver and has been since the early 19th century. The natural beauty of the lake, the volcanic mountains, and the climate bring tourists to Lugano. This area offers many local serviced offices.

Entertainment And Dining Out

Lugano has some fascinating museums and historical sites for visitors. The Museo Cantonale d’Arte contains a permanent collection with work from local artists from the 19th and 20th centuries. To see frescoes by Bernardino Luini from 1529, you will want to visit the Romanesque Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angioli. The frescoes are of Christ’s Passion and retain much of their original colour and power. If sports are more your thing, you might want to check to see if the Hockey Club Lugano is playing. The team is a member of the Switzerland National League. They are the winners of seven national titles and have made it to both the European Cup and the Euroleague. The Club plays at the Resega Arena. Many of the restaurants you will find in Lugano will be Italian in cuisine. For local cooking that features both Swiss and Mediterranean choices, try the Cyrano restaurant for dishes such as chamois cooked with juniper and game sauce, or spatzli and red cabbage. For a lovely Tuscan meal there is the Bottegone del Vino restaurant where you will find fine wine paired with Tuscan flavoured entrees.

Transport Information

Lugano Airport is the closest airport to the city which is located in Agno. Both Swiss Airlines and Darwin Airline operate out of the Lugano Airport. Transportation to and from the Lugano Airport is limited so visitors might want to choose the Milan airports in Italy which are approximately an hour from Lugano. In the city itself, there is good access to public transportation including city buses, the Gotthard Railway, and three funicular railways.
