Sevilla is located near the River Guadalquivir. It is more commonly known as Seville. This is the capital of one of Spain’s autonomous communities, Andalusia. The city of Seville dates back to the days of the Romans when the city was first known as Hispalis. Even today, the residents of the city are known as hispalenses. The city is home to more than 700,000 residents within the city and a metro area population of 1.2 million.

Most of the residents of Seville work in the service sector, however the city is also the only commercial river port in the country of Spain. The river can be negotiated by cruise ships which arrive on a regular basis. Industrial parks are beginning to appear in different areas of the city such as Cartuja 93 which employs more than 15,000 individuals. Growth industries include renewable energy and aeronautics. The city is also home to the University of Seville and the University Pablo de Olavide. There are many areas for executive suites to rent in the area of Sevilla.

Entertainment And Dining Out

There are several UNESCO World Heritage Sites within Seville, including the Alacazar, the Archivo General de Indias, and the Cathedral of St. Mary. The Cathedral dates back to 1401 and was built using elements from an earlier mosque. The lavishly decorated Cathedral is one of the largest remaining medieval cathedrals. The Giralda bell tower was originally a minaret. In the same way, the Alcazar across from the Cathedral was fashioned from a Moorish Palace in 1181, taking more than 500 years to complete. Seville is also home to modern design such as the Metropol Parasol which is the largest wooden structure in the world. For dining out, visitors have a variety of choices from casual dining choices to elegant high-end restaurants. The Taberna del Alabardero restaurant is set amidst a 19th century mansion with several dining rooms and a patio for teas. Visitors can also stay here in period-correct guest rooms. The Calle Alvarez serves an Andalusian style cuisine. This well-known restaurant in Seville has been around since 1954, starting out its life as a bodega. Located near the Cathedral, the restaurant features local favourites such as lubina con naranjas which is whitefish with oranges.

Transport Information

Seville is served by the San Pablo Airport which handles both passenger traffic and cargo traffic. In the city itself, visitors can travel around using the city’s public transportation system which includes the TUSSAM bus system, the Metro de Sevilla light metro network, and the MetroCentro tramway in the centre of the city. The E-1 motorway runs west to Huelva and the E-5 passes through Cordoba on its way north to Madrid.
