Tbilisi is the capital of the republic of Georgia. It is located on the Mtkvari (Kura) River. This capital city lies partially in a steep gorge. The old town runs beside the river, with narrow, winding streets dominated by the ruins of old fortresses. Newer parts of the city lie beneath Mount Mtatsminda, accessible by a funicular rail line, north of the city is a large reservoir fed by irrigation canals.

Business Information

Tbilisi is a major cultural and educational centre. There is a university, and other institutions of higher education, with more than 100 research establishments. The city is a principal industrial centre of the region. Its engineering services contribute to the production of electric locomotives, machine tools, agricultural machinery, and electrical equipment. Other industries contributing to the economy of Georgia include textiles, leather goods, footwear, furniture, beer, wine, spirits, and a range of foodstuffs. Georgian Airways has its head office in Tbilisi, as do several major institutions of higher education. The biggest Georgian university is Tbilisi State University. One of the major companies in the area is the Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline. Commercial, institutional, and tourist companies utilise shared office space throughout the city.

Entertainment And Dining Out

The ski resort of Gudauri, located 120km (75 miles) north of Tbilisi, is a popular place for skiing in the winter, and in the summer is a great place to begin a hike through mountain meadows populated with an array of flowers. There are some spectacular views to be witnessed in this area. Local cuisine includes specialties such as marinated aubergines, pkhali, made from young spinach leaves pounded together with spices, and Khachapuri, which are layers of flat bread alternated with melting cheese. They also enjoy Basturma – a cured meat served with assorted fresh and pickled vegetables.

Transport Information

Tbilisi airport is located 17 km (11 mi) southeast of the city. Direct trains cover the route between Tbilisi Central station and the airport in 35 minutes. The Tbilisi Metro serves the city with rapid transit subway services.
