Cologne is the fourth largest city in Germany and the largest city in the state of North Rhine–Westphalia. It is a key European inland port. Cologne is the historic, cultural, and economic capital of the Rhineland. Situated about 21 miles (34 km) northwest of Bonn and 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Düsseldorf, Cologne is lies just below where the Rhine enters the fertile North German Plain. At this point the river is navigable to seagoing vessels. The immediate surroundings of Cologne offer a variety of vistas. The picturesque hills of the Bergisches Land lie to the east, while on the west is another group of hills forming a chain called the Ville. The North German Plain stretches away to the north and northwest, and the Rhine Valley winds to the southeast toward Bonn.

Cologne is a banking centre for Germany. It is the site of one of the world’s oldest commodity and stock exchanges. The city is headquarters for the European operations of the Ford Motor Company, the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research, and Lufthansa. Entertainment And Dining Out

Kölsch beer is the drink of choice in Cologne. This is a light and slightly bitter drink that is made at over a dozen local breweries. Try a sip or two at the lofty Früh am Dom, a rustic beer hall situated next to the cathedral. You can also head to the Zülpicher Viertel for a sample. This is an entertainment area that offers a selection of pubs and bars. In Old Town, just south of the Dom, you can spend a delightful evening at the antique-filled Das Kleine Stapelhäuschen. This is a friendly wine tavern situated near the old fish market. This tavern is the place to order the region’s signature dish, sauerbraten (braised beef marinated with vinegar) with potato dumplings. Another great dining choice in the city is to have Angus steak with asparagus and truffle jus, at the wood-panelled Hanse Stube, located in the city centre.

Transport Information

Cologne and Bonn are served by the same airport, Flughafen Köln/Bonn Konrad Adenauer. It is 14km (9 miles) southeast of Cologne. Flights come from most major European cities. There is bus service available from the airport to the centre of Cologne. Typical travel time is twenty minutes. The Cologne Hauptbahnhof (train station) is in the heart of the city, next to the cathedral. This depot has frequent rail connections to all major German cities and many continental destinations.
