Mainz is the capital of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The city is located on the Rhine River, across from Wiesbaden. It is a suburb and close area to Frankfurt. Historically, Mainz was a Roman fort city, founded in the late 1st century BC. This city protected the west bank of the Rhine and was a portion of the Roman Empire’s northern most frontier. The moveable-type printing press was invented in Mainz and the first books printed using movable-type were created in Mainz by Gutenberg in the early 1450s. Historically the area is referred to as Mayence.

Wine and all that it entails is an important aspect of Mainz’s economy, and the wine economy of Germany. The sparkling wine producer Kupferberg produces in Mainz-Hechtsheim. In Mainz is the Haus des Deutschen Weines (House of German Wine), is the headquarters of the German Wine Academy, the German Wine Institute and the German Wine Fund. Other companies in Mainz include the Schott AG - glass manufacture, the Werner & Mertz - chemical factory, IBM, and Novo Nordisk. There are many locations throughout Mainz for executive suites.

The Rheinradweg (Rhine Cycle Route) is an international cycle route that begins at the mouth of the river Rhine, and continues through four countries at a distance of 1,300 km (810 miles). There is an additional cycling tour that heads from Mainz towards Bingen and on further to the Middle Rhine, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mainz offers many dining options besides traditional German cuisine. There are also a number of international choices that include Chinese, Thai, Greek, Italian and Turkish. One restaurant in Mainz is Eisgrub-Brau. This brewery is a favourite of locals, yet caters to tourists with menus in English and a wide selection of food choices.

Transport Information

Mainz is served by Frankfurt Airport, just ten miles or 16 km away. This is the busiest airport in Germany. It is connected to Mainz by an S-Bahn line. Mainz Central Station or Mainz Hauptbahnhof, is one of the busiest stations in Germany. It is a stop for the S-Bahn line and by over 400 daily - local and regional trains. There are also over 75 long-distance trains served from this station. Mainz is a great place to get around by bicycle. There are several miles of on-street bike lanes.
