In the north German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is the city of Rostock. This city is situated on the Warnow River. It is 12 km (7 miles) from Warnemünde, which sits on the coast of the Baltic Sea. Rostock houses several academic institutions including one of the oldest universities in the world. The University of Rostock was founded in 1419. The campus maintains a botanical garden, the Botanischer Garten Universität Rostock.

Business Information

Rostock’s economy is based upon tourism, the service industry, and maritime industries that include shipbuilding. Major companies in Rostock include Aker Warnow Werft – shipyard, Neptun Werft – shipyard, Suzlon - wind turbine manufacturer, Hanseatische Brauerei Rostock – brewery, and Caterpillar - manufacturer of diesel ship engines. There are many buildings in town and on the coast with offices that offer executive suites.

Entertainment And Dining Out

One of the jewels of the area is Warnemünde beach. Here you can swim, sunbathe, and participate in many water sports. The Warnemünde lighthouse, built in 1897, is near the beach promenade. Still in use, you can climb the high tower and enjoy a fantastic view of the Baltic Sea and nearby Rostock region. The promenade offers a fish market, restaurants, and pubs. At the harbour there are a number of restaurants and bars that offer German, Italian, Greek, Spanish, and other cuisines. There are also several boats in this area that have been converted to take-out restaurants. These floating food stalls sell a variety of cooked fish, including herring, salmon, squid, mackerel, pickled fish, smoked fish, fish sandwiches, fish-kebabs and fish cakes.

Transport Information

The Airport Rostock-Laage is close to Rostock. Alternatively you can fly to into Hamburg or Berlin Schönefeld and travel by train to Rostock. There is a Regional-Express train to Rostock from the Hamburg Central Station. Within Rostock there is good inner-city tramway system and a bus system. Rostock is an important ferry port in the Baltic region, regular services run to Gedser, Trelleborg and Helsinki, among others. Cruise ships use the port of Warnemünde just north of Rostock.
