Abu Dhabi is the capital and the largest of the United Arab Emirates. It is situated on a T-shaped island, extending into the Persian Gulf and is connected to the mainland through several bridges. The name Abu Dhabi comes from the Arabic phrase “Father of Deer”. Abu Dhabi accommodates federal government offices and important financial institutions. It has undergone a rapid development and urbanization in recent years, turning it into a cosmopolitan metropolis. Being one of the largest producers of oil in the world, the city recently has been investing in financial services and tourism. Abu Dhabi has been ranked as the richest city in the world.

Main industries in Abu Dhabi are related to government, industrial, financial, and tourism. The city is home to the United Arab Emirates Government, the Abu Dhabi Emiri Family, and the President of the UAE. In addition, many financial institutions are located here, such as the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, and the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates. There are many large corporations and multinational companies with office space or other facilities in Abu Dhabi, including Microsoft, Pepsi, Marriot Corporation, Fed Ex, and Merck Serono. The city holds nine percent of the oil reserves in the world, as well as five percent of the natural gas. Etihad Airways’ headquarters is based in Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi has a lot to offer in terms of sights and activities. The city is filled with impressive, architecturally unique high-rises. Many of these are found in the financial districts of the city and include Abu Dhabi Investment Authority Tower, National Bank of Abu Dhabi, and Emirates Palace. The Sheikh Zayed Mosque is one of the most important architectural landmarks in Abu Dhabi and one of the most visited tourist attractions. The capital has more than two thousand parks and gardens, and more than 400 km (248 miles) of coastline. The spectacular waterfront Corniche offers activities that include cart riding, walking, playgrounds, and shows. Abu Dhabi has a variety of restaurants throughout the city including The Olive Branch, which serves Mediterranean cuisine, drawing influences from France, Spain and Turkey. Make your way to Rimal for Asian dishes, Nalas Aappakadai Restaurant offers excellent South Indian food, Al Safadi has an authentic Lebanese menu, Prego’s is a popular Italian restaurant, and Zen is the place to go for Japanese fare.

Transport Information

Getting to Abu Dhabi is possible from most major worldwide destinations, as it has its own airport. The Abu Dhabi International Airport is the second busiest in the country and is home to Etihad Airways. Access from the airport to the city includes taxis, and shuttle buses. The city is built for cars, and there is reliable public transportation in the form of buses.
