Dubai is a city, and one of the seven Emirates in the United Arab Emirates. It is situated southeast of the Persian Gulf, on the Arabian Peninsula. The city is part of the Dubai-Sharjah-Ajman metropolitan area. Dubai is the second largest Emirate by territory and the largest in the UAE in terms of population. The city of Dubai is located on the emirate’s northern coastline. It is a cosmopolitan metropolis, acting as a business and cultural heart in the Middle East. The city is known for its skyscrapers, its man-made islands and some of the biggest shopping malls in the world.
Dubai’s economy was founded on oil production. Recent focus has moved to tourism, financial services, and real estate. Dubai has recently been ranked as the best place to live in the Middle East. Dubai’s industry is influenced by the presence of Jebel Ali Port, the largest man-made harbour in the world. The city is an IT, media and financial hub, with its Dubai Internet City and Dubai Media City, which have attracted many large corporations. Companies with office space or other facilities in the area include Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, IBM, CNN, BBC, and Reuters.
The city of Dubai has been ranked as the shopping capital of the Middle East and one of the world’s most visited cities. Attractions can be divided between Old Dubai and Modern Dubai. Major points of interest in Old Dubai include the historic Bastakiya District, the Dubai Museum, Jumeirah Mosque, the open museums of Shindagha District, and many souks. Modern Dubai offers Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world and Dubai Mall, the largest mall in the world. Dubai has a variety of restaurants offering diverse cuisine options. Jabal Al Noor, Pars Iranian Kitchen and Al Fanar Restaurant & Café all serve unique takes on local dishes. Asha’s brings a taste of India to Dubai, and Kiku is a popular Japanese establishment.
Getting to Dubai from abroad is easy, as it has its own airport – Dubai International Airport, which is the hub for the Emirates Airline. The airport has been ranked fifteenth busiest in the world. It is connected to downtown Dubai by taxis and public transport, including bus and the Dubai Metro. The international cruise terminal at Port Rashid offers access to the city by boat. Getting around Dubai is possible by the Public Transport System, run by the Roads and Transport Authority, as well as by ferries and water buses.
