Catania is located on the east coast of Sicily and is the second largest city on the island. Being a prominent hub for tourism, industry and technology has earned it the deserving nickname of ‘European Silicon Valley’. Catania has historically been at the heart of seismic activity in the region, Mount Etna, the famous volcano, has been known to bury the entire city with lava at least seven times in recorded history. The American Naval Air Station Sigonella is located close to Catania, providing a significant economic boost to the entire region. Frequent bus services offer easy access to the airport from the city centre. The main railway station is within walking distance of the city centre, with access to several places in the vicinity. There are numerous ferry services that can be used to get to Catania from other Italian centres such as Naples and Genova. Getting around Catania is very easy thanks to the frequent bus services within the city.
