Almaty is the former capital of Kazakhstan, and is still its largest city. This is the financial and cultural centre of Central Asia. To the south of the city are beautifully rugged, snow capped mountains. The city is near the border of Kyrgyzstan.

One of the largest industries in Almaty is finance. Almaty is home to the BTA Bank, which is the largest bank in Central Asia, Kaz Kom Bank, and other major banks. This is also home to the Kazakhstan Stock Exchange is based in Almaty. Air Astana is headquartered in the Air Astana Centre 1 in Almaty. There are many options for serviced office space throughout the city.

Entertainment And Dining Out

There are many things to do in Almaty, even ice-skating! The Medeo Ice-skating stadium is located just outside town on the road to Chimbulak, and you are able to rent skates from there at a reasonable cost. You can ski or snowboard at Chimbulak, Ak-Bulak, and Tabagan ski resorts. There is a cable car that will take you up to Kok-Tobe for wonderful views of the mountains, vineyards, and Almaty. It leaves from Satpaeva and Dostyk. You can have a cup of hot chocolate at a table under the shadow of the TV tower or take a ride on an unpowered rollercoaster. Almaty offers many types of restaurants. There are several Korean restaurants. One of the more popular of these is in the square in front of the entrance to the Exhibition on Temirazova. It is frequented by the business men from the Korean Embassy, Samsung, and LG. Georgian restaurants Tbilisi on Zheltoksan, or Pirosmani on Ablai Khan are great places for vegetarians to dine. They feature items such as khachapuri, cheese filled bread, eggplant stuffed with nuts, spinach with nuts, and various savoury kebabs.

Transport Information

The Almaty International Airport is 16 km from the centre of Almaty. There are two railway stations, Almaty-1 and Almaty-2. Almaty-2 is located in the city centre; Almaty-1 is 4 km from the centre. There is an underground system that is being developed throughout the area. Currently this Metro system serves the following stations Alatau, Auezov Drama Theatre, Baikonur, Abay, Almaly, Zhibek Zholy, and Raiymbek batyr.
