This municipality and a city in the east of the Netherlands, is situated near the German border. Nijmegen celebrated its 2000th birthday in 2005, it is believed to be the oldest city in The Netherlands. The city has a large student population, and a prominent and enjoyable old town.

The nearest major airport is Weeze Airport. This airport has international flights from Weeze, Germany and is 55 km (34 miles) from the centre of Nijmegen. Another major airport in the area is Eindhoven Airport, which has international flights from Eindhoven, Netherlands and is 72 km (45 miles) from Nijmegen. The Dutch Railways, Nederlandse Spoorwegen, serve Nijmegen from all parts of the Netherlands. The neighbouring cities of Arnhem and ’s-Hertogenbosch are linked to Nijmegen by commuter trains, and the city bus company, Novio, connects to all neighbourhoods in Nijmegen.
