One of the most incredible landmarks in Oman is the Grand Mosque, with tall minarets and large golden dome dominating the Muscat skyline. The mosque took six years to build, and is full of gold, Italian white marble, a ten ton crystal chandelier, and other crystals. Another great place to visit is Rustaq Fort. There is a maze of stairways and corridors, with carved archways and beautiful rooms such as the sultan’s guest room, the winter room, and the prison. The women’s and girl’s rooms are decorated with teapots, painted ceramics, and many fabulous bracelets. Near the city of Sur you will find Ras Al Jinz, a great beach where you can see protected turtles lay eggs and go back to the sea. The best time to see the turtles is from July through October. Omani cuisine is less spicy than Arabic food. The countries long coastline leads a great choice of seafood. Shark is a common dish. One of the most popular sweets is halwa. This hot, semi-sold substance is eaten with a spoon. The country’s dates are celebrated, eaten alone or used in several dishes.
