Murcia is the capital city of the Region of Murcia, in Spain. This is the seventh largest city in the country. Murcia is located on the Segura River, in the Southeast section of the Iberian Peninsula. This area is noted for its hot summers, little precipitation, and mild winters. The town is near a fertile plain that is referred to as the Huerta de Murcia, this area is called Europe’s orchard as it has long been a producer and exporter of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. This is a university town with one public university: the University of Murcia, one private university: the Catholic University Saint Anthony, and several professional schools in the area.

Business Information

Murcia’s economy is based on agricultural, residential tourism, industry, and services to support the university students. There are many British and American companies with satellite factories and office space in the area, including Henry Milward & Sons (which manufactures surgical and knitting needles), General Electric, and Paramount Park Studios. Residential tourism means that many people from northern European countries have a second home in the area.

Entertainment And Dining Out

Architectural lovers must see the Cathedral of Murcia. Built between 1394 and 1465 in the Castilian Gothic style, the tower was finished much later and the building shows a unique blend of styles. Two stories are Renaissance style, one is Baroque, the bell pavilion is both Rococo and Neoclassical, and the façade is believed to be a masterpiece of the Spanish Baroque style. Dining options in Murcia include La Taberna de las Mulas – featuring tapas and an example of the local cuisine, Madre de Dios – is informal and also feature local tapas, La Pequeña Taberna Típica – features great views, wonderful tapas, and fresh fish.
