Located on the Mediterranean Sea where the Turia River flows into the ocean, Valencia is the third largest city in Spain. The city faces the Gulf of Valencia. This global Mediterranean city is the capital of Valencia, one of Spain’s autonomous ruling communities. It is home to more than 2.3 million residents. Valencia is also one of the busiest container seaports throughout Europe. Tourists flock to Valencia’s beaches in the summer and spend time enjoying the city’s main sports options including golf, diving, tennis, and cycling.

The service sector is the most important economic driver for Valencia. Recent statistics show that more than 84% of the city’s population is employed in the service sector. Tourism is the biggest industry followed by construction which is driven indirectly by the visitor traffic. In addition, the city is experiencing growth in the manufacturing and industrial sectors with important trade fairs being held here, and an increase in the number of telecommunication and transport companies operating in the city. The regional airline Air Nostrum is headquartered in Valencia and there is a major Ford Motor Company factory in the nearby town of Almussafes. Valencia offers visitors a chance to learn about the history of its ancient past in combination with a sparkling nightlife and wonderful restaurants. For great restaurants, clubs, and cafes the Carmen Quarter has a Bohemian flavour that makes it the perfect place for a night on the town. Just remember that nightlife starts late in Spain and clubs rarely open before midnight. Walking the ancient streets of the older sections of the city, visitors will be intrigued by buildings from the time of the Romans. There is a Cathedral which dates to the 13th century and the Basilica of the Virgin has towers that were once part of the medieval city wall. From tapas to traditional Paella, visitors can find restaurants featuring authentic Spanish cuisine. The Casa Montana restaurant has been open since 1836 and is widely believed to serve the best tapas in the city. The ingredients are always fresh and the food is inventive. La Riua restaurant provides traditional Spanish food in a welcoming dining room filled with Spanish tiles and ceramics. There is lots of seafood on the menu, including a variety of paellas in addition to roasted pork, and spicy sausages.

Transport Information

There are two airports which serve the city of Valencia, the Valencia Airport is 9 km (5 miles) outside of the city and Alicante Airport is 170 km (106 miles) south of the city. For travel within the city public transport includes Metrovalencia, rail and buses. Valencia is well-connected by a number of major highways. The A3 directly links the city with the country’s capital, Madrid, and the E-15 provides an easy connection with Barcelona.
