Baker Street can be found in the district of Marylebone in the City of Westminster London borough, and its name originates from the builder William Baker who developed the street in the 18th century. As the years have passed, the area has witnessed a considerable shift from residential properties toward a more commercialised location where businesses are in abundance. Baker Street is a busy thoroughfare, running south from Regent’s Park, meeting up with Marylebone Road, Portman Square and Wigmore Street. Within the surrounding area, there is a plethora of upmarket hotels, restaurants and bars with plenty of choice for hosting a business meeting. What’s more, there are many tourist attractions nearby, most notably the home of Sherlock Holmes at 221B Baker Street and Madame Tussauds on Marylebone Road.

Setting up your business here

There are a diverse range of businesses operating within the Marylebone district, including health clinics, as the area is very close to Harley Street, as well as the Special Operations Executive headquarters, and The Seychelles Consulate, which is also located on Baker Street. London & Regional Properties (L&R), one of the largest privately held companies in Europe, developed a modern office complex at 55 Baker Street where the Marks and Spencer head office was located until 2004. Among their other investments are: London Hilton on Park Lane, The Empire, Leicester Square and Diageo’s head office in WC1. There are also some well known educational establishments in the local area including the University of Westminster and the City of Westminster College. Furthermore, there is currently a significant redevelopment project underway which is looking to enhance the former railway and canal, attracting both investment and new businesses to the area.

Things to do in Baker Street

Baker Street and its surrounding areas provide plenty of entertainment for post-work downtime, as well as suitable venues for client meetings. For music and performance lovers, Wigmore Hall, a well-known concert hall, is just a short distance from Baker Street, as is the London Palladium, among other theatres. Dining options are also vast, with several luxury restaurants in close proximity, including Il Baretto, an upmarket Italian restaurant; The Wallace, a hidden gem on Manchester Square, and the Corner Restaurant and Champagne Bar located in Selfridges. There are a host of bars and pubs to choose from, such as the Artesian, Wonder Bar, Purl and Carbon, and pubs include The Volunteer, the Duke of Wellington and Swan & Edgar. For a lunchtime stroll and for an ideal place to enjoy the tranquillity away from the bustle of the city centre at lunchtime or after work, you can head to Regent’s Park, the entrance of which is under 10 minutes’ walk from Baker Street tube station.
