Established in 1694 and with a history that spans well over three centuries, the Bank of England is the UK’s central bank and the second oldest bank in the world. The Bank of England plays a vital part in the UK’s financial markets and economy, and following monthly Monetary Policy Committee meetings makes crucial decisions relating to matters such as base interest rate movements in the UK. Legend has it that the gardens of the central bank are haunted by the ghost of Sarah Whitehead, or as she is better known, the Black Nun. This has led to the Bank of England sometimes being referred to as The Old Lady’.
