Barkingside is an area of Ilford within the Borough of Redbridge in north-east London. Redbridge is located with Chigwell to the north, Romford to the east, Barking to the south and Stratford to the south-east, with Barkingside found right at the heart of the borough. Barkingside, like Ilford, was historically part of the county of Essex but it is now very much part of Greater London and it has close connections to better-known parts of the capital, including those across the central, eastern and westerly parts of the city. The area has a well-established history as an important part of London for Jewish communities living and working in London and Essex. Among the most historic landmarks in the area are Barnardo’s Chapel and the Barkingside Tube Station, both of which were first built around the turn of the 20th century.
