Deptford is an area that lies on the southern banks of the River Thames within the London Borough of Lewisham. The region is best known for its association with a variety of seafaring exploits, shipbuilding and maritime commercial activities of all sorts. Deptford grew out of two small villages based on the banks of the Thames and flat areas around the River Ravensbourne, which runs into the Thames via what is now known as Deptford Creek. Deptford Dockyard was a significant hub of commercial and maritime activities from the 1500s until the latter parts of the 20th century, when all its docks were eventually closed down. In the 21st century, Deptford remains a thriving commercial and residential district that is home to dozens of small and medium-sized companies and thousands of Londoners. Among the best-known institutions in the area is Deptford Market, which takes place throughout the year along Deptford High Street.

Setting up your business here

Deptford is very well connected to other parts of south and central London via road and rail transport links. The London Overground also runs close by and is accessible from New Cross station. Companies operating from premises in the area include the video production company Live Vision Studios, the daily deals company Deals 52 and the recruitment agency Complete Source Business Solutions. Deptford is directly west of Greenwich, which is home to dozens of businesses and prominent educational institutions. The area is also immediately south of the Isle of Dogs, which incorporates Canary Wharf, one of the UK’s leading financial service hubs.

Things to do in Deptford

The heart of Deptford is its High Street, which has been home to a thriving and boisterous open air market for decades. Nearby attractions include Greenwich Park, the National Maritime Museum Gardens and the Greenwich Royal Observatory, all of which are well worth a trip from anywhere in London. Deptford Creek, as it approaches the Thames, makes for interesting scenery and great views, but the area is perhaps best renowned at present as an exciting place simply to hang out. The pubs in Deptford are among the most popular to be found anywhere south of the Thames, with establishments such as the Duke, the Royal Albert and the Dog and Bell drawing visitors from surrounding areas and offering a unique taste of modern London. Meanwhile, if you’re looking for somewhere to eat out in Deptford try Manze’s for some amazing pie and mash, Mama Pho’s for some authentic Vietnamese and the Big Red for tasty pizzas and scenic views of Deptford Creek.
