Croydon is a major metropolitan centre in south London, historically part of the county of Surrey but now classed as being within Greater London. Lying just less than 10 miles south of Charing Cross, Croydon is very closely connected to central London and its primary business districts but the town also has a thriving economy of its own. In centuries past, Croydon was a market town renowned for its brewing and leather tanning industries. Modern Croydon is a bustling urban centre and a very significant hub for local businesses and commercial activity of many different sorts. Authorities in the area are intending to increase investment and the quality of local infrastructure via a major regeneration scheme referred to as Croydon Vision 2020.

Things to do in Croydon

There are some very impressive landmarks well worth taking in during any visit to Croydon, not least the Battle of Britain Monument and the Croydon Clocktower. Popular arts venues include Fairfield Hall, which has hosted the likes of the Beatles, Tom Jones and Jools Holland since its opening back in 1962. The Ashcroft Theatre meanwhile stages a varied array of ballet, opera and pantomime performances throughout the year. Another local cultural highlight is the Museum of Croydon, which is an integral part of the Clocktower. There are dozens of excellent places to eat out in Croydon, with some of the best including the contemporary British eatery Albert’s Table, the Khyber Indian Restaurant and Aqua Croydon, which serves some very fine Mediterranean foods. Meanwhile, if you find yourself in search of a quality traditional pub in the area, you should consider seeking out the Gun on Church Street or the Duke of Gloucester on Syndenham Road.
