Billingham is a town that lies in the county of Durham, in the north east of England. The town gained prominence due to the chemical factories that operated out of the area, especially during the two world wars. The modern day town has two major parts, one of which is Old Billingham. This section of the town runs from the village green up to the old ICI factory. The rest of the area, with planned estates, makes up the remainder of the town. The Billingham Beck Valley Country Park, a major landmark, is a national reserve and was constructed on a former industrial waste-dump. With its diverse culture and rich history, Billingham has distinct character, which is further reflected through its combination of the historical and the modern.
