Woolwich is a former navel hub in south east London, within the London Borough of Greenwich. The area grew significantly during the eighteenth and nineteenth century, when Woolwich became a leading military and industrial town. The area went through a period of decline, however since the redevelopment of the Royal Arsenal ground, it is becoming increasingly popular with businesses again. Woolwich sits on the south bank of the river Thames, and you can cross to the north via ferry or foot tunnel. The Woolwich foot tunnel crosses underneath the Thames and was opened in 1912. The impressive entrances at either end are grade II listed, and the tunnel itself was refurbished in 2010. As well as modern buildings, there are several examples of impressive historic buildings in the area, and the Edwardian Baroque town hall is well worth a visit.

Setting up your business here

Woolwich has great transport links into central London, as well as Kent. Woolwich Arsenal station is part of the Docklands Light Railway and has trains direct to Lewisham and Charing Cross, making it a convenient location to set up business. The Woolwich Ferry is a completely free service which carries trucks, cars, cyclists and pedestrians to North Woolwich every weekday until 8pm. Woolwich High Street is well set up to suit your business needs, and there are many larger retail chains opening up in the area. Businesses in the area have good links with neighbouring Greenwich, and there are opportunities for networking and expansion. The Woolwich Building Society started in the area, and online retailer FR Joseph Anton Ltd, who specialise in CCTV equipment, have their head office in Woolwich.
