Wapping is a district in east London and within the Borough of Tower Hamlets. The area lies along the north bank of the River Thames between the City of London and Canary Wharf. For centuries, activity in Wapping was dominated by maritime industries, principally boat-making and mast making, and by seafaring more generally. Many of the inhabitants of Wapping at any given time during its history have been sailors or commercial traders, and the district is closely associated with British naval adventure and particularly with the great explorer James Cook. Much of Wapping was destroyed during the Second World War but in more recent years it has been extensively regenerated under the guidance of the London Docklands Development Corporation. Today, Wapping is full of interesting historic sites and has a series of pubs and restaurants taking advantage of the district’s position directly beside the River Thames.

Setting up your business here

Wapping is home to a variety of commercial warehouse spaces and residential premises, as well as a healthy supply of high calibre serviced office space. Among the businesses based in the district is News International, the British newspaper arm of the global media group News Corp. Other companies with offices in Wapping include the corporate finance firm UHY Hacker Young, Communicate Media Consultancy and the TV, film and video production company Cherryduck Productions. The nearby districts of Canary Wharf and the City, which can be reached easily from Wapping by taxi or Tube, are the two foremost financial services and banking sector hubs in the UK.

Things to do in Wapping

Wapping’s position, on the banks of the Thames, makes it a terrific place to work, live, do business or just spend time. Some of the pubs in the district are worth a trip from anywhere else in London alone, with the Captain Kidd and the Prospect of Whitby both offering amazing views over the river. Wapping’s pubs, though, are not just places to grab a drink as they help to tell the tale of the area’s history as well. Nowhere more so than at the Prospect of Whitby, which is claimed to be the oldest riverside tavern in London. There are also some excellent restaurants in Wapping, with Il Bordello and the aptly-named River View among the very best. At the eastern edge of Wapping lies King Edward VII Memorial Park, which is well worth a visit, while to the west there is St Katherine’s Docks, which is a relaxed and charming area dotted with stylish bars and elegant eateries.
