Luton is a large town in the English county of Bedfordshire that lies around 30 miles north of central London. Along with its neighbouring town of Dunstable, the area is home to roughly a quarter of a million people. The University of Bedfordshire is based in the town and London Luton Airport is among the largest commercial air transport hubs in the south-east of England. Historians date the town s origins back to the 6th century, when Saxons established Luton along the banks of the River Lea, which runs from Bedfordshire to the River Thames and east London. Luton has a proud history as an important commercial centre, with the town having long been associated with hat-making and more recently with car manufacture and with Vauxhall Motors.

Setting up your business here

Luton has a good supply of serviced office and retail environments that attract a wide variety of businesses to the area. A number of very prominent airline and holiday companies are headquartered in Luton, including Monarch Airlines, EasyJet and Thomson Holidays. Other businesses with offices in the town include the accountancy giant Ernst & Young, the pharmaceuticals firm AstraZeneca and the data and analytics group Experian. Part of the appeal of offices in Luton is their proximity to the town s major international airport and to all parts of central and Greater London, which can be reached very easily by train or by bus.

Culture and Entertainment

Luton s history as the hat-making heartland of southern England has left a notable legacy on the town, with the Hat Factory now functioning as a theatre and local arts centre for the area. Meanwhile, the local football team, nicknamed the Hatters, keep hundreds of fans entertained on an almost weekly basis at its famous Kenilworth Road stadium. Other attractions in and around Luton include Whipsnade Zoo, which is the UK s largest, and Stockwood Park, which has an excellent visitor and discovery centre. Other historic landmarks in the area include the Whipsnade Tree Cathedral and Someries Castle, which is still largely intact despite having been built in the 15th century.

Eating out

Luton town centre has plenty of quality restaurants for visitors to choose from, not least Le Steak Parisien, the Hellenic Greek Taverna or the Casa Mia Italian Restaurant Pizzeria. Or for great places to grab a drink or a bite to eat, you could try the Frog & Rhubarb, the Grill House on Dunstable Road or the White House on Bridge Street.
