New Cross Gate is an area in the London borough of Lewisham, which is situated in the southeast of London. The entire area was originally known by the name of Hatcham. However, in the early 20th century, it was divided into two wards, which were New Cross and New Cross Gate. A tollgate was built in the area in the 18th century to collect toll from the thousands of visitors to the area. It was from this prominent tollgate that the name to the vicinity was derived. The locality has the distinction of housing the largest tram depot in London, as well as being the destination for the final journey of London’s tram service in 1952. Today, famous sights and attractions including the Fan Museum and the Dilston Grove art gallery are responsible for bringing in a large number of visitors throughout the year.

Business Information

In spite of being a suburban locality, the area is a popular commercial destination thanks to the reasonable rates for executive suites and serviced offices in the area. Numerous businesses such as housing development firms, advertising companies, travel agencies, software design firms, and lithographers have a presence in the area. Shoppers can indulge in some retail therapy at the hundreds of stores selling all kinds of retail goods including clothes, shoes, flowers, accessories, books, jewellery, antiques, and children’s toys.

Entertainment And Dining Out

No visit to London is complete without experiencing its unique pub culture. An exciting evening of entertainment awaits you at the many pubs in the vicinity such as Royal Albert, Davy’s Wine Bar, The Hill, The Old Brewery and 40 Maltby Street. If you’re seeking a quiet dinner instead, you will not be disappointed with the numerous dining options in the area. The more popular eateries are New Hong Kong City for Chinese food and Nouvelle Spice for fiery Indian cuisine.

Transport Information

Mainline railway services can be accessed from New Cross and New Cross Gate stations, both within easy walking distance of each other. City Cruises runs sightseeing boat trips from Greenwich Pier all the way to Westminster Pier, whereas the Thames Cable Car provides an alternative way to cross the Thames to the Royal Docks.
