Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland, located on the River Clyde. It grew from a small rural settlement into one of the main seaports in the world. Glasgow expanded rapidly during the industrial revolution when it was an important centre for ship building, and has continued to grow ever since. Glasgow s population peaked in the 1930s, and in the 1960s the city was the subject of a large-scale urban renewal programme. Glasgow is one of Europe s most vibrant cities and has been voted as a UK destination which is on the rise. The city centre has been built on a grid system, making it easy to navigate and get around for tourists and residents alike. To the east of the city is the commercial centre known as the Merchant City, home to Glasgow s cultural quarter.
