Brighton is a large town on the southern coast of England and, along with its neighbouring town of Hove, a significant urban area within the county of Sussex. Home to hundreds of businesses of varying sizes, Brighton is a major draw for tourists from within the UK and beyond. Many thousands of Londoners visit the south-east coast and Brighton’s beaches every month, and the town has a strong and vibrant economy beyond what tends to be a buoyant tourist trade. Brighton’s history as an inhabited area stretches back at least a millennium but its popularity and economic importance was boosted dramatically with the advent of rail travel and more direct contact with London during the 19th century. Key areas within Brighton and Hove include those around the Lanes, North Laine and the Cultural Quarter, which are collectively the heart of the town between its central train station and the waterfront.

Setting up your business here

Brighton has a varied and healthy supply of high quality office space and the town is the economic mainstay for the conurbation comprising of Brighton, Worthing and Littlehampton. Among the most prominent local office occupiers is the financial services group American Express, whose Amex House development is used as its European headquarters. Other big employers and office space residents in Brighton include the likes of the Lloyd’s Banking Group and the Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company. The town also has a strong reputation as a hub for digital and new media businesses, as well as e-learning service providers and computer game developers.

Things to do in Brighton

Brighton is a seaside location and its beaches and piers are always fun to visit and wander along at any time of year. For shopping, the Lanes is a great place to seek out a bargain, while the Brighton Marina is the largest of its kind in Europe and one of the best waterfront destinations anywhere in England. The Brighton Museum & Art Gallery and the Booth Museum of Natural History both offer plenty of interest to visitors and Brighton Racecourse always offers the chance for fun day out. For high calibre dining options, Brighton has some great choices, not least the Coal Shed, which serves amazing seafood and steak. Or for a taste of top quality local ingredients, try the Brighton Temptation or for a slice of fine French food head along to Ship Street and the Bistro at Hotel du Vin. Among the best pubs you’ll find in and around central Brighton include The Evening Star on Surrey Street and The Cricketers on Black Lion Street, where once the great novelist Graham Greene spent many an evening.
