Bristol is a major city in the south-west of England that lies on the River Avon and a little over 100 miles west of central London. The city is the 8th most populous in the UK and has been the primary commercial centre in the areas around Somerset and Gloucestershire for more than eight centuries. Now an important hub of activity in a variety of industries including publishing and music production, Bristol remains a major draw for tourists and for businesses alike. The city has dozens of Grade I listed buildings and hundreds of Grade II listed buildings, reflecting its long-standing position as southern England’s second largest and most commercially important city. Bristol has a long maritime and international trading history, owing to its proximity to the Severn Estuary, into which the River Avon runs and which leads out to the Bristol Channel, a major inlet between England and Wales.

Setting up your business here

Bristol city centre is a vibrant and busy business environment, combining old and new architecture and including a healthy supply of high quality office space. Businesses with their headquarters in the area include the multinational cigarette company Imperial Tobacco, the interactive marketing firm E3 Media and the student accommodation provider the Unite Group. Other prominent companies with offices in Bristol include the Brightside Group, a financial services provider, and Burges Salmon LLP, one of the 50 largest law firms in the UK.

Things to do in Bristol

Bristol is perhaps the best place in the world to visit if you’re a fan of the renowned graffiti artist Banksy, with many of his earlier works still to be seen on the streets of his home city. Walking tours taking interested visitors around to see some of Banksy’s work are now very popular and run throughout the year. For architectural art, Bristol is lucky enough to have a great example of the genius of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, perhaps Britain’s greatest engineer and the brains behind the Clifton Suspension Bridge. For museums and art galleries there is much to choose from in central Bristol, as there is too in terms of restaurants and places to grab a drink. A particularly great spot for food tasting is St Nicholas Market near Castle Park, which has a range of stores selling all manner of enticing delights. A few of the best restaurants among many are The Bridge Café in Clifton and the Glassboat Restaurant in Harbourside. Great pubs in Bristol are beyond plentiful but two to keep an eye out for are The Ox in the Old City and Smoke and Mirrors, a quite unique pub/magic theatre in central Bristol.
