Bournemouth is a large seaside town on the southern coast of England and the most important economic centre in the county of Dorset. Along with the neighbouring towns of Poole and Christchurch, Bournemouth forms part of a South East Dorset conurbation home to almost half a million people. The town emerged as an important regional centre during the 19th century and in the wake of improved transport links to nearby towns and cities brought about by the introduction of railways. Much of Bournemouth’s early development was based on its popularity as a holiday retreat but by the 21st century the town was well-established in a number of industries, including most notably financial services. Central Bournemouth, between Wessex Way and the English Channel, is a thriving business, tourist and residential area, with other important areas of the town reaching out east towards Christchurch and west towards Poole. The heart of the city is generally taken to be the areas around the River Bourne, which runs through a series of gardens before joining the sea near Bournemouth Pier.

Setting up your business here

The Bournemouth economy is based primarily on service sector industries, with financial services a particularly important employer in the area. Among the businesses with a significant office space presence in the town are Lloyd’s TSB Insurance and the banking group JPMorgan. Companies with their headquarters in the town include the insurance provider LV, formerly Liverpool Victoria, and the retirement housing developer McCarthy & Stone. The town is well-connected by road and rail to its surrounding towns and to London, which is around 90 miles to the north-west.

Things to do in Bournemouth

The Bournemouth International Centre (BIC) is one of the largest and most popular concert and events venues along the south coast of England. There are a wide variety of functions and exhibitions held at the BIC throughout the year. Meanwhile, the nearby beachfront, the Bournemouth Pier and the Bournemouth Gardens are all well worth visiting. Poole Harbour, a little way west along the coast, is one of the leading seaside attractions in England, and the Bournemouth Aquarium is also an excellent place to visit. Central Bournemouth is also home to dozens of very high calibre restaurants, with La Strada, the Urban Beef Restaurant and the EDGE Restaurant and Bar among the best. Or if you are looking for a stylish bar to visit then a few of those well worth investigating include Bar So, Aruba on the Pier Approach, and Daisy O’Briens Irish Bar.
