Vieux Montreal (in English this is Old Montreal) is an area in the city of Montreal, which dates back to the 1600s. This is the oldest area in the Quebec, Canada city. The site is situated in the borough of Ville-Marie. The borders for the area are McGill Street expanded to the rue des Soeurs Grises on the west, on the north it is Ruelle des Fortifications and includes Saint Antoine Street, on the east the border is Rue Saint Andre expanded to include Saint Hubert Street, and on the south it is bordered by the Saint Lawrence River. Vieux Montreal also includes the Old Port of Montreal.

Business Information

Vieux Montreal is a historic district, and as such the main economic factor for the area is tourism. Many of the older abandoned buildings are being upgraded and renovated, then converted into residential condominiums or office space. There are many hotels, restaurants, clubs, and shops in the area. In Montreal proper the major industries are aerospace, pharmaceuticals, and telecommunications. Companies headquartered in Montreal include Air Canada, Cirque du Soleil Quebecor, and the Canadian National Railway.

Entertainment And Dining Out

In Vieux Montreal you can walk around and see that some of the buildings were created during the 17th century. This is one of the oldest urban areas still in existence in North America. In fact, the Saint-Sulpice Seminary is the oldest extant building in Montreal. This area also offers Montreal City Hall, Bonsecours Market, and Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel. There are many well-reserved colonial mansions such as the Château Ramezay and the Sir George-Étienne Cartier National Historic Site of Canada. The Notre-Dame Basilica can be found at Place d’Armes. This area has seen a resurgence of hotels, restaurants, and nightlife. Jardin Nelson offers a garden restaurant on Place Jacques-Cartier. Other restaurants offer classical Parisian "terrace" dining.

Transport Information

Vieux Montreal can be reached via the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport, which is serviced by all the major Canadian and US airlines for domestic and international flights. Getting to the downtown area can be accomplished by taxis, STM Airport Express bus, and regular public transit system. From downtown you can reach Old Montreal via the Underground City and it is served by several STM bus routes and the Champ-de-Mars, Place-d’Armes, and Square-Victoria metro stations. Ferries to the south shore city of Longueuil are available during the summer, as are a network of bicycle paths. Train services to the city are provided by VIA Rail Canada and the American Amtrak. Bus services from Ontario, Quebec, Maine and Vermont all run towards Montreal. Intercity bus companies include Megabus, Adirondack Trailways, and Greyhound Canada.
