Victoria is the smallest mainland Australian state, situated in the south east portions of the country. It is bordered by New South Wales, the Tasman Sea, the Bass Strait, Tasmania, and South Australia. The capital and largest city of Victoria is Melbourne. This city is Australia’s second-largest city overall. Victoria is a diverse state, offering deserts, mountains, rainforests, beaches, wineries, and Australia’s largest inland waterway. Try the Murray to the Mountains rail trail, the Bellarine rail trail, the Ballarat to Skipton rail trail, and the East Gippsland rail trail. All of these trails feature towns and attractions along the way, allowing opportunities for food, rest, and relaxation. Melbourne has a great reputation for dining. Specific types of food can be found in different areas of the city: Lygon Street features Italian, Little Bourke Street offers Chinese, Lonsdale Street is popular for its Greek options, Victoria Street for Vietnamese, Sydney Road features Turkish cuisine, and Johnston Street is known for its Spanish options. Other cuisines found throughout the city’s restaurants include French, American, Mexican, Lebanese, African, Malaysian, Afghan, Swiss and Mongolian. State specialities include Murray cod, a local fresh fish. You will find local beef, lamb, and kangaroo on many menu’s, along with local cheeses, such as the creamy sheep’s milk cheese from Highland Farm.

Transport Information

The Melbourne Airport is the major domestic and international gateway for the state. Avalon Airport is the state’s second busiest airport, and the Essendon and Moorabbin Airports take care of the rest of Victoria’s International air travellers. Hamilton Airport, Mildura Airport, Mount Hotham, and Portland Airport offer scheduled domestic flights. The Victorian road network typically consists of highways that radiate from Melbourne and other major cities. The rural centres offer secondary roads interconnecting the highways to each other. Victoria has the most comprehensive rail passenger service in Australia. The state’s passenger rail service, V/Line provides all rail services within the state. Victoria is also serviced regularly by one boat route, Spirit of Tasmania, which travels between Victoria and the island state of Tasmania.
