Bringing Design and Business Together
Every summer, a revolutionary exhibition takes place in one of London’s most exciting business spaces – The Business Design Centre, located on the fashionable and vibrant Upper Street, Angel Islington.
The Business Design Centre was built in 1861, and was originally known as The Agricultural Hall. At the time, this landmark, designed by Architect Frederick Peck, was a larger than both Alexandra Palace and Crystal Palace (it’s contemporaries), and to this day remains a business centre that hosts some of the most prestigious design industry and business world events.
The event in question is known as ‘New Designers’, and it’s aim is to showcase the very best in graduate design. Around 3,500 young designers exhibit their work each year, and represent the top 200 UK University design courses, unveiling the largest cross-section of design genres, from Branding and Graphics, to Product Innovation.
New Designers has been running for over 25 years, propelling around 100,000 young designers into the professional world. This years event was a ‘phenomenal success, especially in the job offers and the number of industrial relationships now started’, stated Paul Turnock, Senior Lecturer at Brunel University.
A number of award ceremonies take place at the event, with winners receiving a cash prize, plus invaluable advice from industry leaders.
The 2011 New Designer of the Year winners included:
- Louise Tiler of Leeds College of Art & Design with her collection of Surface Patterns & Textiles.
- Brinley Clark of the University of Hertfordshire.
The Runners Up were:
- Jill Shaddock of Manchester Metropolitan University with her Slip Cast Ceramic Collection.
- James Uren of Bucks New University.
The New Designers 2012 event will be taking place between 27th – 30th June, and 4th – 7th July. Whether you are an exhibitor or a visitor, this is an event not to be missed, even if its just to see the impressive Business Centre itself. Exhibitors can download the application form from the New Designers Website to ensure they get a spot to showcase their work.
