Faster trains from Central London to Midlands

Commuters/ office workers could soon enjoy 1 hour train journeys from Central London to East Midlands with a new high speed railway network. The journey currently takes 1 hour 45 minutes.

The Department of Transport suggest that the estimated cost of the project will be around £32bn, the economic benefits around £44bn and fare revenues, approximately £24bn, over a 60 year period. Faster trains may also encourage commuters not to take so many short distance flights.

Despite the suggested economic and commuter benefits, there have also been protests to stop the new network. Some people argue that the environment will be affected and money needs to be spent improving our existing rail infrastructure first. (1)
