Managers need to find middle ground between firm but fair.

Companies working within are obliged to recognise their employees’ need for flexibility when it comes to the hours spent in the work place.

Paul Roberts, healthcare consultant at the insurance broker, says that “Managers need to manage the soft side of life and understand the team that reports to them so there is flexibility to deal with our complex lifestyles and a firm but fair line drawn so that abuse of the process is limited".

Mangers need to compromise when it comes to staff absence, yet recent research by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) reveals that absenteeism is an expensive business, costing UK companies £32 billion a year.

UK office workers are also shown to take almost double the amount of sick days compared with office workers in the US, and produce an average yearly statistic of 10 days’ unscheduled absence.
