New Skyscraper Planned in Croydon: Design Inspired by “Voluptuous” Women
This week, developers have submitted a detailed planning application for a £350 million skyscraper design, which is inspired by the “voluptuous shapes of a curvy woman”.
The 55-storey tower, designed by architect Piers Gough of CZWG, is set to be the centrepiece of a project which will also include a four-star hotel, 400 residential flats and 170,000 sqft of office space in the South London Borough of Croydon.
Development companies, Guildhouse UK and Rosepride Properties, hope to aide Croydon in part of its redevelopment programme, which is reportedly worth £3.5 billion.
Throughout its history, Croydon has been regarded as one of the ’bleakest’ areas in London, and since the recent riots, the area is screaming out for help.
David Hudson, Chief Executive of Guildhouse UK told The Times, “Croydon, rather unfairly, has a bad reputation and that is because of its building stock and we all now recognise that putting a major dual carriageway through a town was a disaster. There are signs on the railings by the Whitgift Shopping Centre saying ‘People die here. Do not cross the road here.’ But everything else about Croydon is ideal and it is absolutely vital that we get substantial numbers of people back living in the town as that will drive the regeneration.”
Mr Hudson also insisted that the pre-letting of office space was essential to the projects success, as it would help attract tenants and tourists to the flats and hotel. However, Mr Hudson remains confident that pre-letting won’t be a problem, as large corporate businesses in the area are looking for modern office space.
Croydon council are expected to make a decision on the redevelopment application in January 2012, meaning construction would start in early 2013.
